The Baltic and Scandinavian countries share a folk tradition that celebrates the summer solstice: on Midsummer’s Eve, people gather on the shores of lakes and rivers to mark the shortest night of the year by singing and dancing till dawn around huge bonfires. The great extremes of light and darkness in countries of the Far North have been an inspiration to many of their native composers. For its last concert of the season, voces boreales proposes works on themes that evoke the summer solstice: the enchanted evening, the mysterious night, the unifying force of fire, the shimmering water and the dawning of the new day on the horizon.
