For its first concert of the season, Voces Boreales has once again drawn on its musical and spiritual sources for inspiration. While last season’s Brevis Nox developed the theme of the summer solstice, Lux autumna now celebrates the autumn equinox.
The programme is based on one of the ensemble’s traditional themes: the northern lights, or aurora borealis, from which the group derives its name. It will therefore invite the audience to contemplate different aspects of light — the singular radiance of autumn afternoons, the passage of evening into night and the eventual arrival of the dawn.
With this programme, the concert will provide a context for the temporal nature of our contemplation, showing that, while music is of the moment and mankind of but a few hundred thousand years, that light is the origin of the universe and of all life therein.
