Synopsis

This first disc from VB8 is a collection of carols and songs for the festive season, all composed within the last thirty-five years, or, in the case of the two traditional French carols, in newly-written harmonisations. The disc starts and ends with titles by a favorite composer of the group, Arvo Pärt, and includes repertoire from an eclectic mix of living composers. Most notably, the disc includes the first recordings of carols by three Canadian composers; Elizabeth Ekholm, Louis Desjarlais, and Benjamin Sigerson. The stylish and intimate nature of these performances allow the listener to get to know the individual voices of the eight singers as well as enjoying the soundscape of the octet as a whole. The deliberate omission, for the most part, of traditional Christmas carols also allows for year-round listening.

Reviews

Tight harmonies and perfectly synchronized phrases seemingly pose no challenge to this ensemble. Christmas is all about finding light in the darkness, and VB8 has arrived like a beacon in these troubled times. — Robert Rowat, CBC [The best new holiday songs you need to hear this year]

Speaking of perfection, here’s a new album that comes awfully close: It’s called Winter Magic, our introduction to an outstanding vocal octet from Montreal called VB8. — Frédéricka Petit-Homme, Choral Concert, CBC
